Sharbat Sadar is one of the oldest chest formulations in the Unani repertoire, built around the mucilaginous fruits and roots that soften hardened phlegm and let the chest clear itself. Laraib’s Khass version is a concentrated, DRAP-registered medicine rather than a drink, decocted slowly so each ingredient gives up its full virtue.
What it is traditionally used for
- Acting as mukhrij-e-balgham — an expectorant that helps loosen and bring up phlegm
- Relieving cough in both its dry form and its heavy, productive form
- Easing nazla and zukam, catarrh and the ordinary cold
- Bringing comfort when the chest feels congested and breathing feels tight
- Supporting lungs left weak and tired after a long bout of illness
How it is made
Unnab, sapistan, banafsha and mulethi are steeped and then decocted slowly over hours, never boiled hard, so the mucilage draws out intact. The strained decoction is reduced with sugar to a thick, coating syrup. Herbs are single-origin and identity-checked on arrival. No artificial colour, flavouring or chemical preservative is added.
How to take it
Adults should take two teaspoons three times a day; children over five, one teaspoon three times a day. Take it neat so it coats the throat, or in a little warm water, and avoid cold drinks straight afterwards. The bedtime dose matters most — it is what settles the night cough.

Our hakeem in Multan has prescribed this for years. I keep one in the cabinet from October. The night dose is what makes the difference, my wife stops coughing and we both sleep.

Effective, and the taste is much better than the bitter chest syrups I remember from childhood. The 120 ml runs out fast in a family though, and I would happily buy a bigger bottle.

I smoke and the morning cough is my own fault. This is the only thing that clears my chest properly. Small bottle but the dose is only two teaspoons, so it lasts about ten days.

My son had a cough that hung on for three weeks after flu in Peshawar. Two teaspoons three times a day and by the fourth day the phlegm was actually coming up instead of sitting there.
