For a few weeks each summer the falsa carts appear across southern Punjab, and the little purple berries are gone almost as fast as they arrive. Laraib buys the crop at its peak, presses it while it is still fresh and holds that brief season in a bottle — the same deep colour, the same sweet-sour bite, long after the last cart has left.
What it is traditionally used for
- Reducing the intensity of summer heat and the severe thirst that follows it
- Keeping the body cool, hydrated and refreshed through the hottest part of the day
- Guarding against the effects of the loo, the dry heatwave wind of the plains
- Sharpening a flagging appetite when the heat has taken it away

How it is made
Ripe falsa is bought from single-origin orchards in the Multan belt, de-stalked and pulped within hours of picking. The juice is pressed, strained clear of skin and seed, then cooked gently with sugar so the fruit’s natural colour survives instead of being replaced. No artificial colouring, essence or preservative is used at any stage.
How to take it
Two tablespoons in a glass of chilled water makes the classic drink; add a pinch of black salt if you like it sharper. Many families dilute a whole bottle into a jug with ice and mint for guests. Best taken in the afternoon and again in the early evening during hot weather.
