Behidana is a curious little seed — steep it and it releases a clear, slippery mucilage that coats whatever it touches. That is the whole basis of its reputation in Unani medicine, and it cannot be rushed or forced with heat. Laraib draws it out patiently over hours, which is why this syrup pours with a faint silkiness and a pale, honeyed gold you cannot fake with colouring.
What it is traditionally used for
- Long taken to soothe a dry, scratching or irritated throat
- Given traditionally for a hard, unproductive cough that will not settle
- Used as a demulcent to coat and calm inflamed passages
- Taken through dusty and smoky weather when the chest feels raw
- Kept as a mild, gentle daily syrup suitable for the whole family
How it is made
Whole quince seeds from a single-origin source are cleaned and cold-steeped for hours so their mucilage releases intact rather than being boiled out. The infusion is strained through fine cloth, sweetened lightly and reduced at the lowest workable heat to preserve that slippery texture. No artificial colour, flavour or preservative is added.
How to take it
Take 2 tablespoons, around 30 ml, either neat off the spoon so it coats the throat properly, or in a little warm water. Twice a day is usual, and last thing at night is when most people feel the benefit. Children over five may take one teaspoon.

Ordered during the smog season in Lahore when everyone at home was coughing. Went through the 800 ml in a month across four people. Much gentler than the chemist syrups and no drowsiness.

Good gentle syrup, clearly well made and you can feel the slipperiness that behidana is supposed to have. I just wish the effect lasted a bit longer through the night. Still buying it again.

Peshawar winters wreck my throat every year. Two spoons at night, taken straight, and the scratchiness eases enough to sleep. Mild taste so my younger one takes it without a fight.
