Few remedies carry the standing of kalonji in this part of the world, and none is more often kept in the kitchen cupboard as well as the medicine box. Laraib cold-presses single-origin Nigella sativa seed without heat or solvent, so the oil arrives dark, peppery and unmistakably alive — nothing blended in, nothing taken out, exactly as the classical texts intended it.
What it is traditionally used for
- Long taken for a range of complaints of the stomach and its everyday upsets
- Used in support of intestinal health and comfortable digestion
- Traditionally given in complaints of the liver as a supportive measure
- Taken by women for general physical weakness and low energy
- Used for backache and the discomforts that accompany the monthly cycle
- Taken to relieve constipation and encourage regularity
How it is made
Single-origin black seed is cleaned, graded and pressed in a slow screw press kept below the temperature at which the oil’s volatile character is lost. There is no solvent extraction, no refining, no deodorising and no dilution with a cheaper carrier — the oil is simply settled, filtered and bottled. Nothing artificial is added at any stage.
How to take it
Half to one teaspoon (roughly 2.5 to 5 ml) once or twice a day, taken with warm water or stirred into a spoonful of honey to soften the peppery bite. Traditionally it is taken on an empty stomach in the morning. It may also be massaged into the lower back for aches. Start with the smaller dose for the first week.
Good to know
- 30 ml bottle — taken by the teaspoon, so it lasts three to four weeks of daily use
- 100% cold-pressed black seed oil, undiluted and unrefined
- Made by Laraib Herbal Pharma, DRAP-licensed Unani manufacturers in Multan since 1998
- The oil is naturally dark and sharply peppery; this is a sign of a genuine cold press

My digestion has been unreliable for years and this settled it more than anything the chemist sold me. I take it before breakfast. Arrived in Gujranwala in three days with the seal intact and a proper batch number on the label.

No complaints about the oil itself, the quality is clear from the first spoon. The taste is genuinely harsh though, honey is not optional. I would order the larger size if Laraib made one.

Started taking it for the tiredness and the backache that comes every month. Six weeks in and both are noticeably easier. My mother in Sialkot has now started on it as well. The 30 ml lasts me about a month.

I have bought kalonji oil from four different sellers and most of it is cut with something cheap. This one is dark, peppery and burns slightly at the back of the throat, which is how it should be. Half a teaspoon every morning with honey.
