Egg oil is one of the more surprising preparations in the Unani pharmacopoeia: the yolks of hens’ eggs, cooked down slowly until the oil separates and can be drawn off clear and golden. It takes a great many eggs to fill even a small bottle, which is why hakeems have always treated roghan baiza murgh as something to be used drop by drop.
What it is traditionally used for
- Applied to the scalp as a traditional remedy for baldness and receding hair
- Long used on the bare patches of bal-khora (alopecia areata)
- Massaged in to help hold off premature greying and safaidi
- Used on fine, thin and weak hair to give it body and strength
- Applied to relieve dryness of the hair and a tight, flaking scalp
- Traditionally worked into areas where hair growth has stopped altogether
How it is made
Yolks from a single-origin farm supply are separated by hand, cooked down over low, patient heat until the oil breaks free, then pressed and filtered until it runs clear golden. The whole batch is made in one day and bottled the same day — egg oil does not tolerate standing. Nothing artificial is added: no mineral oil, no perfume, no colour and no preservative.
How to take it
For external use only. Part the hair and apply a few drops directly to the scalp or bare patch, massaging with the fingertips for three to five minutes. Use three times a week, leaving it in for two hours or overnight before washing with a mild shampoo. A little goes a long way — do not saturate the hair.
