Kalonji has been called the seed for every ailment but one, and in Unani kitchens it has always been the go-to for a heavy, gassy stomach. Laraib grinds it fresh with carom, fennel and dried ginger into a phakki that is genuinely pleasant to take, portioned into sachets so nobody has to guess the spoonful. One pack, the whole household.
What it is traditionally used for
- Traditionally taken by those working on a growing waistline alongside diet and walking
- Long used to relieve gas and the bloated fullness that follows a heavy meal
- Taken for indigestion and dull stomach ache
- Traditionally used to help relieve constipation and keep motions regular
- Used to stop sour belching and the reflux that comes with it
- Suitable for every adult member of the family
How it is made
Whole black seed is cleaned, winnowed and stone-ground in small batches at low speed, so the volatile oil is not lost to heat as it is in high-speed milling. The digestive spices are ground separately and folded in by weight. Single-origin seed, sieved fine, with no sugar, filler or artificial flavour.
How to take it
Take one level teaspoon, about 5 g, with water, warm milk or a spoon of honey, once or twice a day after meals. Taken half an hour after dinner it works best against wind and heaviness. Drink plenty of water through the day while you are on it.
Good to know
- 30 g pack of ready-measured single-dose sachets
- Pure ground herb and seed with no added sugar
- Kalonji is stone-ground in small batches for freshness
- Reseal or store sachets in an airtight jar away from damp

Effective for gas, no question about that. The powder is a little dry to swallow plain so I take it in milk. Wish the pack had more sachets for the price.

My husband and I both take it. The sachets are convenient because you are not measuring anything. Tastes of ajwain and kalonji, quite warming. We have ordered it three times now.

I sit at a desk in Lahore all day and dinner used to sit on my chest until midnight. One sachet after dinner and that has stopped. Six weeks in and my trousers are looser too, though I have also been walking.
