Black mulberry — toot siah — ripens for only a few short weeks in the orchards of southern Punjab, and Unani physicians have long reserved its dark juice for the throat. Laraib takes the fruit at the peak of that season and reduces it slowly into a syrup thick enough to coat and settle a throat worn out by coughing, shouting or a long working day.
What it is traditionally used for
- Soothing the pain and rawness that settles in the throat
- Easing swelling and inflammation felt on swallowing
- Relieving the persistent scratchiness that makes the throat feel dry
- Restoring a voice that has turned hoarse or been lost altogether
- Supporting the throat when the glands there are enlarged and tender
How it is made
Ripe black mulberries are washed, pressed and strained, and the juice is then simmered gently over low heat with cane sugar until it thickens to a slow-pouring syrup. Unhurried reduction protects the fruit’s colour and character. The fruit is single-origin, bought from growers Laraib has worked with for years, and nothing artificial — no colour, flavour or preservative — is added.
How to take it
Adults take two teaspoons three times a day, sipped slowly and undiluted so the syrup lines the throat rather than washing straight down. Children over five take one teaspoon. It is at its most comforting last thing at night, and a spoonful stirred into a little warm water makes a gentle bedtime gargle before swallowing.

I recite at our local mosque and throat strain is an occupational hazard. Keep this on the shelf all winter now. Delivery to Bahawalpur took three days and the bottle was properly sealed.

Good product, honest ingredients, and my son takes it without arguing, which is rare. My only complaint is the 120 ml size — for a family in Rawalpindi it finishes quickly and I would happily pay for a larger bottle.

Ordered after a fortnight of throat pain that nothing was touching. It coats properly instead of sliding down. By the fourth day swallowing was comfortable again. Bottle is small but two teaspoons three times a day still lasted me twelve days.

I teach primary classes in Multan and lose my voice by Thursday most weeks. Two spoons at night and one before school has become routine since March. The syrup is thick and genuinely tastes of mulberry, not sugar.
