Ajwain is the seed a Punjabi grandmother reaches for before she reaches for anything else. Distilled, it sheds the harshness of the raw seed and keeps the thymol — that hot, clean sharpness that cuts straight through a heavy meal. Laraib draws it in a traditional deg at the Multan works: one seed, one water, and nothing else in the bottle.
What it is traditionally used for
- Taken as a carminative to break up and expel trapped wind
- Traditionally used to sharpen a dull appetite and set digestion right
- Long taken for stomach pain, griping and post-meal heaviness
- Used in Unani practice for old, lingering fevers and phlegmatic complaints
- Traditionally taken to support the normal working of the liver
- Used in water retention (istisqa) as it is understood in classical practice
How it is made
Whole ajwain seed, single-origin from the Punjab, is soaked overnight and then steam-distilled in a traditional deg — the vapour rising through the seed bed and condensing slowly, so only the volatile aromatic fraction crosses into the receiver. Nothing is added afterwards: no sugar, no alcohol, no essence, no preservative. Water and the seed’s own oil.
How to take it
30–60 ml, morning and evening, plain or cut with an equal measure of water if you find it sharp. After a heavy meal, half a glass on its own is the usual way. Warmed slightly it acts faster on a cold, wind-bound stomach; chilled it is easier to drink in summer.

Ordered three bottles to Sahiwal for the family. Sealed properly, arrived in four days. My appetite improved inside a week — I was barely eating before. It is a fixture in our fridge now.

Effective for wind and stomach cramps, no argument there. I do have to dilute it half and half because the taste is very strong on its own. My husband drinks it neat and says it is fine.

Sharp and hot on the tongue, exactly as ajwain should be. Nothing added and no sugar, which is why I moved off the sweetened brands. Good for my acidity after late Karachi dinners.

We drink half a glass after dinner every night now. The bloating after heavy Multani food is much less and I sleep better for it. The 800 ml bottle lasts about three weeks between two of us.
