Ma-ul-Asab means, quite literally, the water of the nerves. It is one of the great Unani distillates: ashwagandha and sweet colchicum for the joints, carom and ginger for warmth, mint to carry it, all drawn over gentle steam until only the aromatic water remains. Laraib distils it in copper at Multan, as it has done for more than two decades.
What it is traditionally used for
- Traditionally taken to relieve pain and tightness in the joints and muscles
- Long used to lift nervous weakness, sluggishness and low stamina
- Traditionally taken for numbness and tingling in the hands and feet
- Used in Unani practice as supportive care in phlegmatic complaints, facial palsy and paralysis, alongside medical treatment
- Taken to support mental alertness and the body’s working capacity
- Traditionally used where nerves feel weakened by advancing age or long illness, for men and women equally
How it is made
Fresh and dried herbs are macerated overnight, then distilled slowly in a copper still so the volatile aromatics carry over without scorching. Only the first and middle runs are collected; the tail is discarded. Nothing is concentrated, sweetened or coloured afterwards, and every herb is bought single-origin from named growers.
How to take it
Take 30 to 60 ml morning and evening, plain or diluted with an equal measure of water. It is best taken on an empty stomach, before breakfast and again before bed. A course of six to eight weeks is traditional. Warm the dose slightly in winter if you prefer.
Good to know
- Generous 800 ml bottle, around a three-week course at the full dose
- Steam-distilled, unsweetened and entirely free of sugar
- 100% natural Unani distillate with no added colour or preservative
- Keep the cap tight and refrigerate after opening to preserve the aroma

I work twelve-hour shifts in Mirpur and my legs used to feel dead by evening. A dose before bed has changed that. It smells like a hakeem’s shop, which I rather like.

My mother had numbness in her feet for years. Her physician kept her on her regular medicines and allowed this alongside. She says the tingling at night has reduced a great deal.

Helps the stiffness in my hands considerably. The taste is sharp and medicinal, quite strong on ajwain, so I dilute it well. The 800 ml bottle is heavy but good value for the quantity.

I am sixty-one and my knees and shoulders ached every morning in Sargodha. Two months on this and I can get out of bed without holding the wall. My wife has started taking it too.
